Multiple Disc Air / Hydraulic Clutches or Brakes (AHA)
- Highest torque in the smallest space
- Wet or dry application
- Automatic wear compensation
- Long life floating discs for low heat and extremely low neutral drag
- Requires no special tools or for installation and repair
- Torque range 5 lb. ft.- 2,500 lb. ft.
The MAXITORQ® Multiple disc air or hydraulic spring set clutches and brakes deliver more than ten times the torque of single disc air/hydraulic units of the same package size. The ® floating disc principle incorporates separator springs between brake discs and assures fast disengagement with minimum drag and heat when in neutral. Hardened steel inner friction discs are splined to the body for proper lug-load distribution and operate against bronze faced steel outer discs providing long wear and smooth operation.
The brake can be operated either dry or in oil. For wet applications, the clutch should be ordered without bearing shields. For dry applications the clutch is furnished with permanently lubricated ball bearings.
Multiple Disc Air / Hydraulic Spring Set Brakes (AFS)
- Highest torque in the smallest space
- Operates in dry or wet applications
- Low inertia
- Fast, reliable, positive braking action
- Power off design (spring applied, air/hydraulically released)
- Virtually drag free neutral regardless of brake orientation
- Universal floating hub for interior or exterior shaft attachment
- Low backlash models available
- Available with optional cover for harsh environments
The MAXITORQ® standard spring applied, multiple disc, air/hydraulic brakes are designed for use as holding brakes, medium duty starting and stopping brakes, and for emergency stopping. Braking torque is applied when the pneumatic or hydraulic pressure is removed from the piston chamber. This can occur intentionally or when there is a loss of pressure. Removing pressure from the piston chamber allows the compression springs to clamp the MAXITORQ® multiple friction discs between the pressure plate and the stationary end plate resulting in a constant holding force.
To release the brake, pneumatic/hydraulic pressure is applied and the brake is free to rotate. When disengaged the multiple friction discs are uniformly spaced by a unique ® separator spring design, which ensures separation of the rotating friction discs, regardless of the orientation of the brake. This virtually eliminates parasitic drag, which is detrimental to brake life.
Typical applications include medical diagnostic equipment, parts handling equipment, holding brakes in servo drives and robotic mechanisms, emergency stopping brakes on power generation equipment and parking brakes on mobile and military equipment. We offer custom brakes with torque capabilities up to 3200 lb. ft. A significant portion of Carlyle Johnson’s production is directed to user-specific requirements, including application of AFS brakes for frequent, high energy stops, or for extremely fast or slow braking.
The Carlyle Johnson Machine Company has over 100 years of experience in the power transmission industry producing high quality clutches, brakes, torque limiters, controls and power take-off packages. Our clutch and brake knowledge and our capability to respond to customer requirements is known throughout the industry. We specialize in solving unique power transmission problems. Our engineering staff is available to assist you with your specific power transmission requirements.
Single Disc Air / Hydraulic Clutches or Brakes (MAC or MAB)
- Large friction areas and finned armatures provide long life and efficient heat dissipation
- Automatic wear follow-up
- Brake friction pads can be changed without disassembling the unit (does not apply to MAB 30 or fail-safe units)
- Actuation forces are self contained
- Units are shipped pre-assembled
- Torque output and speed of engagement are easily regulated
- Air consumption is very low during actuation and zero after actuation.
- Available with spring or air actuation
- Three standard designs are available:
The Pilot Mount version is used when two parallel shafts are to be connected. A sprocket, sheave, or gear supplied by the customer can easily be located on, and bolted to, the pilot hub.
In the Sheave version the pilot mount hub is replaced by a bearing-mounted sheave to which is attached the friction material. The smallest diameter sheave is standard for each clutch size. For other sizes please contact us.
The Coupling version consists of the Pilot Mount and a flexible-coupling conversion kit. It is used when two in-line shafts are to be connected.
Tension brake applications:
The standard friction material supplied in MAXITORQ® clutches and brakes provides a desirable combination of high torque and excellent wear resistance. However, in tension brake applications a friction material with a lower coefficient of friction is recommended. This altered friction material is referred to as "LK facing", which lowers torque by approximately 40%. Heat dissipation capability relative to torque is considerably increased which results in much longer life. The LK facing can also be used to advantage when "soft" starts or stops are desired.
